Dangerous Government

Journal Entry: Fri May 9, 2008, 2:48 AM

Dangerous Images

I've put together a news article regarding the recently passed UK Criminal Justice & Immigration Bill which will criminalise the possession of adult, staged, consensual violent pornography with draconian penalties of up to 3 years in prison. Crazy.

I'm looking forward to your debate around this matter, but I do encourage you to view it without prejudice and most importantly, whilst not freaking out about potentially being locked up because you have a pic of Betty Paige in a corset, or that you bought your girlfriend a pair of fluffy handcuffs for valentines day and can't remember where you put the polaroid pics of her grinning like a fool whilst you pretended you had lost the key.

The question that follows on from the bill is this: if the activities or material in question are not abusive, should they be outlawed because some (or even most!!??) people find them distasteful ?

It is worth remembering that a majority once took that view on homosexuality.

Please bear in mind that this law is for UK only - and whilst the rest of Europe will most likely bring in their own version, deviantART falls under American law.

I just found out my best friend is pregnant with my son.

We've never had sex or anything, I did with the force.

To be honest, I think this will remain mostly dead. I mean it's not as if the police will start raiding houses because someone told them someone has a few snaps of a latex-clad tart. I do see this as a slightly Victorian step, but then I claim the UK has never really become sexually liberated and still speaks about sex in terms of taboo.

I totally agree with you. But there are some things about the bill that REALLY piss me off.

It's troubling that the reference is to images which only appear to be real. What about a movie that had a kidnap scene? Surely most kidnapping films show actors staging a kidnap, and most viewers of such scenes understand this. Must the scene appear lifelike? But then what if a lifelike scene is entirely computer-generated?

Why's it just anus, breasts or genitals?

Having a quick shag in the kitchen might put your bum too close to the oven and result in burning in places you wouldn't want to tell your mother about - doesn't this mean it's a dangerous act too?

Stop giggling!! ;)

What saddens me about this law is that it doesn't in my opinion address the original problem. I've never seen or heard mention of in the news studies that prove that access to such imagery actually *causes* people to go and abuse others; one in, I dunno, thousands of people just has a broken mind and will be violent in the real world.

I'm sure it would be more productive to see if there's anything that could be done to identify and help these people, rather than coming up with confusing legislation like this.

interesting debate and well written newsletter. I agree with the aforementioned that the police are not going to be arresting everyone who has a fetish image on their hardrive ... however I do worry about laws that are so open to interpretation and ones which seem to intentionally muddy the legal waters and leave people uncertain.

Does this mean we can't say 'slap & tickle' now? should it just be 'tickle' and would that not make Mr Tickle from the Mr Men some sort of pervert ?!? oh dear it's a right pickle.

If it's consensual, then LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT (the people, not the politicians).

We don't love "because", but "despite".

This is why there is no such thing as perfect. A flawless beauty would be blank without any appeal nor character. Its scars are what defines it and what inspires emotion... from that moment, it becomes art.

Just another case of a government desperately trying anything to censor sex. One or a couple fucked up individuals do something really bad and the entire country has to suffer the consequences; nothing new. There's a freaking huge gap between actual real rape and violent sexual abuse and stuff like "just" bondage or any other kinky consensual practices, and necrophilia is just beyond anything. As usual, no word is lost on the excess of violence in any media format, that's perfectly OK. Violent TV shows, movies, video games and music are perfectly innocent entertainment for everyone, but sex is the absolute evil corrupter.

You'll have to link me to those studies as I'd like to pick them apart.

Violent imagery doesn't cause people to be violent, it may trigger people who are violent by nature to think that it is condoned, and acceptable, imo -- but this blame culture against the internet in particular is nothing short of a witch hunt.

Well that's just it - I don't recall seeing any studies that say that violent behavior is caused by these images. I think that would be the only justification - if there was a study that proved that.

I've not read a great deal about this legislation, but news stories about the internet interest me and I tend to look out for them.

Last time I checked, violent crime predated the internet. Throwing all this blame around is so useless.
